Deaf Minds Education use specialist trainers who are experts in the wellbeing of Deaf children to support your school. We can deliver our training as well as assist you with any specific issues or requirements you may have.

Our training ranges from 1 to 1 training with members of staff, group training on inset days, entire school assemblies, provision tailored towards certain year groups, and training for parents of Deaf children.

Transition to Deaf Adulthood

Transition to Deaf Adulthood Course

This engaging in-school workshop is informed by first-hand experience and has been designed to help teaching professionals, with Deaf learners in their care, to better understand the barriers that their learners may face as they move beyond adolescence.

During the session, we'll set out to raise awareness amongst teaching professionals, by exploring several key challenges, including lack of specialised information, navigating higher education or work options, and dealing with imposed low expectations.

The workshop will provide attendees with an inside view of the key barriers facing Deaf learners and the tools to develop valuable strategies and interventions by:

  • Raising understanding of the potential barriers facing Deaf learners as they transition to adulthood.
  • Helping you support them as they move into higher education settings.
  • Helping to ensure they have the life skills needed to make their way in the adult world.

Our Transition to Deaf Adulthood training course comes in two different formats. We carry out:

  • a half day course that runs over a three hour session.
  • a full day course that runs over a six hour session.

At Deaf Minds Education, we're passionate about working with schools and parents to ensure Deaf children stay safe online.

With an ever-growing choice of social media platforms to choose from, the online world is a rich and exciting environment in which young Deaf people can explore, engage and find entertainment. Sadly though, as we all know, it can very often also be a potentially dangerous place, especially for children. There are a host of potential threats ever present, ranging from online bullying through to grooming.

This vital in-school workshop has been developed to equip school staff and leaders and the learners in their care with the tools they need to ensure their learners enjoy a secure and positive experience online. The workshop sets out to bring attendees up-to-date with the latest platforms and help them to stay abreast of the potential risks young people can be exposed to when using popular platforms including Facebook and Twitter. During the session, attendees will learn:

  • How to report online abuse, racism and hate crimes.
  • Tips for ensuring children stay safe when using internet.
  • What to do if they are exposed to something upsetting online and how to report inappropriate behaviour or content.

Our Online Safety training course comes in two different formats. We carry out:

Scam Awareness

Sadly, online, email and telephone scams are now more prevalent than ever. Scammers can be based anywhere in the world and are continuously developing new ways to trick people out of their money.

In many cases, individuals who are Deaf are particularly vulnerable to falling victim. This engaging and informative course is recommended for Deaf people, teachers and parents of deaf children, or anyone who is keen to help a Deaf person they know avoid falling victim to scams. It's been designed to help attendees to better understand how to spot the different scams out there and avoid falling victim to them.

During the session, (which is designed for Deaf people or any hearing individuals who are helping someone who is Deaf to learn about scam awareness), we'll cover key areas, including:

  • Raising awareness of different types of scams.
  • Helping attendees to understand the difference between phishing, vishing and smishing.
  • Signposting the best people to turn to if you think you've been scammed.
  • Recognising and avoiding current and emerging scams.
  • Reporting a scam to the relevant authorities.

Our Scam Awareness training course comes in two different formats. We carry out:

An excellent course which takes learners through the first footsteps of learning to sign. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the Deaf Community, Deaf Culture and the knowledge required to communicate more effectively with those who are Deaf, Deafened or Hard of Hearing. By providing your school or college community with Deaf Awareness Training you can reduce the barriers arising from the communication difficulties between hearing and Deaf people.

This training is designed to:

  • Enable staff to communicate with Deaf students.
  • Help you ensure your organisation is complying with the Equalities Act.
  • Equip staff with key communication tools
  • Help you understand the limitations of lip reading.
  • Identify and implement solutions to situations where people who deaf or hard of hearing loss may face accessibility or communication barriers.
  • Help you recognise and respond to the different ways people who are deaf or hard of hearing may communicate.
  • Demonstrate how you can engage and communicate with people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
